Nigerian bronze, phenolic resin, mauritaian shell, red heart and copper woven bead necklace
This unique necklace is comprised of vintage Nigerian bronze, phenolic resin, mauritaian shell, red heart, and handwoven copper beads. Copper and clay beads are used as spacers. I woven the copper beads using a basket weaving technique to match the feel of these wonderful African trade beads. A very pleasing mixture of trade beads.
The Nigerian bronze bead is from the 1600's and beautifully decorated with a nice patina. Phenolic resin - sometimes called African amber- was made in the early 1900's because of the difficulty getting amber. Mauritaian shell beads were worn as hair ornaments and are from the mid 1900's. The red hearts from early 1900's.
length - 21" with 2" extension
clasp - swivel lobster

Phenolic resin copper wire woven earrings
Phenolic resin barrels are accented with copper wire woven caps on each end. Clay discs and red white beads are used as accent beads. I used a basket weave technique to weave the caps and finished each with a hand created post. They are lighter than they look as resin is light and the caps are hollow.
The phenolic resin beads - also know as African amber- were created in the early 1900's because amber was hard to come by. They are easier to carve and more durable. The white hearts are from the late 1800's.
